More than 50 test equipment manufacturers in the world, including the Chinese mainland ones, compete for less than 20% of the market share left by industry giants Teradyne and Advantest. Some of the Chinese companies in this field are becoming domestic substitutes and gradually entering the overseas markets with their advantage, but they still have a long way to go to compete with the global leaders

This is a summary of the key points and information from a JW Insights analyst report on the subject.

Teradyne and Advantest have been the dominant suppliers in high-end IC test equipment for a long time, especially for digital IC, SoCs, memory chips, and high-voltage power devices that require intricate testing.

The recent years have seen the semiconductor industry chain shifting attention to more domestic substitutions, due to the complex geopolitical changes. The changes bring new opportunities for the domestic test equipment companies and some start-ups in China have emerged in this sector.

Some 15 Chinese test equipment makers are active in the market,  according to JW Insights’ incomplete statistics. They include:

Beijing Huafeng Test & Control Technology (AccoTEST华峰测控),

Hangzhou Changchuan Technology (长川科技),

PowerTECH (佛山联动),

Suzhou HYC Technology (华兴源创),

Jiangsu Yawei Machine-Tool (亚威股份).

Different from international vendors with excellent after-sell service to big customers,  local makers can meet the demands of small customers with faster and tailored services.

They can reduce costs, replace expensive general-purpose test equipment and fulfill the security requirement of the supply chain. So they have become an important choice for domestic IC manufacturers.

AccoTEST and Hangzhou Changchuan Technology have been able to substitute overseas counterparts with their analog and digital-analog hybrid IC test equipment. PowerTECH and Hongbang Electronics gained market share in test equipment for discrete components.

However, for test equipment on SoCs, digital chips, and memory chips which require more difficult technology, Teradyne and Advantest have formed their customer eco-systems. Domestic manufacturers are hard to achieve substantial progress in these fields in the short run.

On the other hand, the pressure for more profit margins makes overseas IC foundries look into quality but more cost-effective suppliers.

This creates export opportunities for Chinese companies. For example, AccoTEST and PowerTECH have sold their machines to global manufacturers.

In the process, Chinese test equipment makers encounter challenges with shortages of high precision components and higher quality of materials. It will still take time for them to be more competitive globally.
